A Place to Work

Once upon a time, there was a man who moved to Switzerland before all of his things had arrived by boat. This man needed a place to sleep, so he bought the dreaded sofa-bed. He unfolded it, put some sheets on it, and LIVED on it for weeks. He slept on it, he sat on it, he used the computer sitting on it, and he ate while he sat on it. It was all he had.

Then...his wife got there and some of their things got there, too. She said, "I've got some plans for this room!" You see she needed a place to work. Since she wasn't teaching seminary anymore, and not taking care of grandchildren anymore, and not taking care of a bigger house anymore, and not spending time with friends anymore, she needed to stay busy! What better thing to do than spend time writing the history of their family and catching up on 36+ years of scrapbooking??? So she set to work fixing a space in which she could work that could double as a second guest room if needed. She removed the sheets, folded up the bed, and bought a few pillows:
Since they had left their study intact in Texas, she knew they needed a place to put their computer. So she let him pick out a desk (that she could use if she needed more space) and a chair that rolled from place to place. Downside---it all had to be put together.
She moved the table she had in her scrapbook room in Texas to the middle of the room (a brave move---he did not like the idea). She could use her laptop while he was working on the other computer or....She could use the space for scrapbook layouts, and there was still room to pull out the sofa-bed for friends and family.

She even found a place to tuck away eight containers of pictures and another container of current projects.

Then she had to come up with a place to store most of the things that used to be in her closet in the scrapbook room in Texas. Ummmm, something else to put together. But....it wouldn't hold everything so after another trip to IKEA, she got part of this:

And it still wasn't enough space so she bought set of single shelves. This is still a work in process because the top cubby will have CD storage in it for photo CD's and scrapbooking programs, and a plant and a few things on top. All of this plus this (another little something from home)...

will accomodate the supplies, the papers, the memorabilia, the photos, the partially done scrapbooks, etc.---32 moving boxes worth!

In the next few days (when she can stand the thought of measuring and configuring), framed pictures of their travels will adorn the walls. Until then, she can get up every morning and come to work here:

and thoroughly enjoy re-living the moments she has shared with one awesome husband and eight wonderful kids and now 12 incredible grandchildren. Lucky her!
